Agrasen Ki Baoli – A historical monument in the middle of hustle and bustle of New Delhi !!

I was fascinated to visit Agrasen Ki Baoli ever since I watched the movie PK. Remember Agrasen Ki Baoli was Amir Khan’s abode in the movie. I had made many plans for it but all went for a toss for some or the other reason. Recently I went to Chandani Chowk for a photo walk and while returning I decided to pay a visit to this place. It was an instantenous plan and I went with the flow.

The first look of Agrasen Ki Bauli

Baoli is an ancient term which is symbolic to step well and water reservoirs. I didn’t know much about the historical background of the Baoli but I did some googling after the visit. Wikipedia confirmed that there are no historical records to prove who actually built this baoli but it is widely believed that it was built by king Agrasen during the epic era of Mahabharat.

The first look of the Baoli will amaze you. The steps of the baoli are the highlights and they are made in three levels. The steps are guarded from three sides with walls with interesting arches. You will see a lot of pigeons flying here and there.

The left section of the Baoli, notice the symmetrical design and the arches.

The right section of the Baoli, again the symmetry not to be missed.

Happy to pose, not scared at all.

I climbed down till the end to see the architecture of the building.

I saw a lot of school and college going students clicking pictures and posing in and around the Baoli. I asked the guard if he has ever seen the Baoli filled with water all the way to the top step, he said a straight no. He wasn’t very interested in answering to my questions and thus I refrained from asking any more. When I decided to head back I asked a stranger to click few pictures of mine with the Baoli in the backdrop. He was kind enough to say yes.

I have seen quite a number of forts, tombs and historical monuments but this one was different in many ways. I would recommend you all to pay a visit to Agrasen Ki Baoli.

These kids requested me to click their pictures, when I asked for camera they said click from yours and send us later via email. I bantered a little with their smartness.
